Due to human activities, the Chinese Paddlefish has become extinct from the world
Gland, Switzerland: The Chinese paddlefish, a freshwater fish known to live up to 100 years, has been officially declared extinct.
The World Wildlife Fund for Nature announced the change in Chinese paddlefish status in a report based on a 13-year paddlefish study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Sturgeon Specialist Group.
Chinese paddlefish, which belong to the sturgeon fish family, were last seen nearly 20 years ago in 2003, the study said.
Certain species of fish have become extinct in the world due to human activities such as overfishing and dam construction. The WWF said in a statement that the Chinese paddlefish has been officially declared extinct following a survey of the Yangtze (Asia’s longest river) and the Danube (Europe’s second longest river).
